The Memphis Chapter of Black Girls Code invites you to join us for a spirited and lively evening of conversation and connection, featuring some of the Memphis area’s leading voices of Women of Color in STEM.

This event will be an educational experience for girls, between the ages of 7 and 17, and their parents/guardians. They will hear from a panel of women working in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Mathematics (STEM).

During this workshop, participants will explore coding fundamentals with Google Blockly and SmartGurlz robots and dolls. Our Tech Divas will learn about why coding is important and then get to jump into action by learning to code robots – step-by-step. In this introductory course, (ages 7-12) girls will work together in teams think analytically, design, play, and code in real-time. We also have loads of fun making robot dances, games and videos.

This class is designed for girls ages 12 and under. No prior computing experience is necessary.

Registration begins at 9:15 AM. The event starts promptly at 10:00 AM. Participants don’t need to bring their laptops and both lunch and light snacks will be provided.

STEM Program Offers a Free Trip to Washington DC for Memphis Students
 
Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering (MASE) is launching an after-school STEM program called R3: Rockets, Robotics, and Arithmetic on September 27, 2017. This is a free after-school program for 6th – 12th grade and is available to public, private, and home-school students. Approximately 200 students will be selected to join.
 
R3 participants will receive weekly STEM instruction in preparation to compete in the following regional and national competitions: VEX Robotics, Lego Mindstorm, First Robotics, SeaPerch Underwater Robotics, TARC Model Rocketry, and NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge. In addition, participants will be given the opportunity to travel in the summer to see how STEM works in the real world. The summer trips to places like the Discover Park of America, Nissan and GM factories, US Space and Rocket Center are designed to allow students greater exposure to STEM disciplines.
 
The R3 Project Director of, Cameron Cooley, and R3 Site Coordinator, Marquita Wakefield will be accepting interest applications beginning August 25, 2017. Please go to tinyurl.com/r3atmase to download application or apply in person at Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering main office.
 
R3: Rockets, Robotics, & Arithmetic is a free program to Memphis residents who children are in public, private, and home-school institutions. Food is provided to all participants at no cost to parents. In addition, forty plus students will be given the opportunity to win a free trip to Washington, DC at the end of the school year.
